Slide presents Drawings by Michael Canatsey.
Opening reception on 2/9 during the Belltown Art Walk.
"The Drawings showcased in this collection reflect my enduring interest in Plan-Making exercises, where I manipulate Grids and Geometries using colored pencils, watercolor, and pastel drafting techniques. Simultaneously, I explore indigenous native culture, artifacts, and legends. Currently, I continue to initiate and complete various arhitectural commissions and projects; and, like the sand painter, I “voice” the fundamental design concept that should organize the Drawing and eliminate extraneous ideas or deviations. This exhibition specifically focuses on creating “Pic-to-grams”: reflections of conscious (or perhaps unconscious) thoughts about my favorite Navaho legends and stores. I have incorporated established classic geometry into visual compositions and, in some cases, borrowed icons and symbols from other artists, sandpainters, and plan-makers that, hopefully, enrich and produce even more provocative images."
